Dean Kirby is an award-winning journalist, historian and author. His search for his Irish Mancunian ancestors led him into the jaws of Angel Meadow, Victorian Manchester’s most notorious slum, where archaeologists helped him make a remarkable discovery in the rubble beneath the streets. Read what happened here. He has spent more an a decade studying the slum’s history, including six years researching a PhD on the district’s housing.

When I was about 9 or 10, sometimes my dad would say “smarten yourself up”, you look like you come from Angel Meadow. I never had a clue what he was talking about, but since have read some of the history and intend to visit in the next few weeks. Will look forward to reading your book. Good luck Dean.
